Grade Levels Grades 3 through 6

Estimated Teaching Time

  • Instructions: 10 minutes
  • Periodic observations over two days
  • Culminating discussion: 20 to 30 minutes

Interdisciplinary Connections

  • Role playing scenarios that demonstrate proper hygiene behavior (Social Skills)
  • Observing behavior and making decisions (Social Skills)

Objectives

Students will identify proper hand and personal hygiene behavior.

What Students Do

In this classroom detective activity, children will reward each other for proper hygiene behaviors over a period of two days with a special certificate.

Materials Required

  • “High Fiver” certificates (blackline master 3.6 PDF)
  • Scissors or paper cutter to cut apart certificates
  • Optional Prizes for winners

Advanced Preparation

  • Duplicate blackline master 3.6 PDF, one per student.
  • You may want to consider cutting out (or having a group of volunteers cut out) certificates ahead of time.

Suggested Sequence

  1. Distribute a sheet of “High Fiver” certificates to each student. Have them cut out the certificates and write their name (or initials) on the back of each one.
  2. Brainstorm with the class examples of good personal hygiene.
  3. Explain to the class that they are to be on the lookout over the next two days for good hygiene behavior. Whenever they see a classmate do something that’s in line with good personal hygiene, they should give that student a “High Fiver” certificate, writing the recipient’s name in the space provided.
  4. The recipient should immediately write down the behavior for which he or she is being honored (with help from the person who is awarding the “High Fiver” certificate).

Check for Understanding

  • Have each student count the number of certificates they received. The three students who received the most certificates are the winners. Have them discuss what good hygiene behaviors they did to receive their certificates. Let those students who observed the behavior report, too.
  • Follow this up with a discussion of how a person should demonstrate good hygiene practices in different situations.
  • Ask them to brainstorm ways they can politely inform others of poor hygiene practices they observe.

Extensions

Have students become “High Fiver” detectives throughout the year, rewarding friends and family for good hygiene practices.
