Estimated Teaching Time 15 minutes

Interdisciplinary Connections

  • Coloring pictures (Art)
  • Hypothesizing where germs live (Thinking Skills)

Objectives

Children will:

  • Learn some places where germs can live.
  • Understand what kinds of products get rid of germs and how they should be used.

What Children Do

After discussing where germs can be found, children will color and complete an activity sheet that requires them to identify where germs live and what kinds of products help get rid of germs.

Materials Required

Advanced Preparation

Suggested Sequence:

1. Discuss what the class knows about germs, or recap what it has learned in the earlier lessons. Ask the following questions:

  • What are germs?
  • Where do germs come from?
  • Where can we find them?

2.Show the activity sheet and talk about what is on it. Define for them antiseptic, disinfectant and hand sanitizer.

3.Tell children that they are to circle things that may have germs on them and color the objects that help get rid of germs.

4. Pass out the activity sheets and let them go to work.

Check for Understanding

  • Circulate around the room to oversee and help children in their work.
  • Ask children which germ killers to use (a) on the hands; (b) in the house, such as on the sink or bathroom floor; (c) on a cut or scrape.

Extensions

  • Some children might be able to draw a line from the circles objects (things that may have germs on them) to the appropriate colored-in items (things that help get rid of those germs).
  • Children can make a shape book that shows where germs can be found and the proper hygiene techniques that help get rid of them.
  • Have children find pictures in magazines of products that help get rid of germs.
