Materials Required
Advanced Preparation
Read the story ahead of time to determine what, if any, props you
would use to help tell the story.
Suggested Sequence
- Ask children to sit in a circle.
- Discuss children’s experiences with being sick. Introduce
the concept of hand hygiene as a way to stay well.

and tell them that they will hear about the day Little Betsy Bookworm
got a sickness called Wormgerm.
- As Little Betsy Bookworm recounts her day, tell the children
to raise their hands each time they hear something they think
may have caused her to get Wormgerm.
- Read the story aloud, stopping at times to discuss what is occurring.
- At the end of the story, Little Betsy Bookworm asks the children
to help her recall all the times she could have gotten Wormgerm.
- Children should illustrate or write about at least one possible
way Little Betsy Bookworm might have gotten Wormgerm.

- Do people get Wormgerm? What kinds of germs do people get?
Do they get germs the same ways that Little Betsy Bookworm got
Wormgerm?
- How can people stay healthy?
