Grade Levels Pre-K through Grade 2

Estimated Teaching Time 15 minutes

Interdisciplinary Connections

  • Counting, manipulating counters (Math)
  • Listening to and creating stories (Language Arts)

Objectives Children will:

  • Apply addition and subtraction skills.
  • Learn that hands can be washed and sanitized to get rid of germs.

What Children Do

As they listen to a story, children will manipulate counters and count aloud with the teacher.

Materials Required

Advanced Preparation

Separate handfuls of counters into baggies or cups, one per child or pair of children.

Suggested Sequence

  1. Invite children to sit in a circle on the floor or at a table.
  2. Pass out a handful of counters to each child or pair of children.
  3. Explain that, during the story you are about to tell them, they will be asked to place counters on their hands and take them off again. (If working in pairs, one child will hold his or her hand out while the other places counters on it or removes them as instructed by the story.)
  4. Share “Two, Four, Eight Little Germs” story with children, reading slowly, making certain that they are keeping up the counter manipulations.

Check for Understanding

Ask the following questions:

  • What should we do when we have germy or dirty hands?
  • Is it enough to just rinse with water?
  • When are good times to wash and sanitize our hands?
  • What can we do to kill germs on our hands when soap and water are not available?

Extensions

  • Increase difficulty by combining the counters of two or more children. For example, have two children shake hands. Put both of their counters in a pile on the table and ask those children to count them.
  • Pair up children and have them make up their own situations with adding and taking away of germs.
