Grade Levels Pre-K through Grade
2
Estimated Teaching Time 10
to 15 minutes
Interdisciplinary Connections
- Sharing poetry (Literature)
- Optional Reading and recitation (Reading, Drama, Public Speaking)
Objectives
Children will:
- Identify times when hand hygiene is a good habit to practice.
- Follow a narrative poem about clean (and very dirty) hands.
What Children Do
Children will listen to and learn from the humorous tale of a mischievous
little girl who seems determined to get dirty.
Materials Required
Advanced Preparation
None, although the teacher may wish to photocopy the poem for children
with sufficient reading skills.
Suggested Sequence
- Ask children to share times they have tried to stay really
clean, but just couldn’t help getting dirty. [A party,
someone's wedding.]
- Tell them that you know of a little girl who gets dirty all
the time, and that her name is Little Dirty Dotty Dunn!
- Ask children to repeat her whole name. Have them try to say
it three times in a row really fast.
- Read the poem.
Check for Understanding
Ask the following questions:
- What are some things that made Little Dirty Dotty Dunn get dirty?
- What did Little Dirty Dotty Dunn need to do to get clean? [Wash
hands with soap and water; use hand sanitizer.]
- Is it bad to get dirty? [No, it's easy to get dirty while playing,
but it is important to clean hands thoroughly after playing.]
- When are other good times to wash or sanitize our hands? [After
sneezing or coughing into them; after shaking someone's hand; accept
other reasonable answers.]
Extensions
- Some children may enjoy acting out the poem in front of other children
or their parents.
- Teachers may want to ask the class to help co-write the further adventures
of Little Dirty Dotty Dunn.
