Grade Levels Pre-K through Grade 2

Estimated Teaching Time 30 minutes

Interdisciplinary Connections

  • Constructing a self-portrait (Art)
  • Learning health etiquette (Social Skills)
  • Emphasizing the relationship between sneezes and germs (Science)

Objectives

Children will:
  • Learn that covering a sneeze helps to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Understand that using a tissue or sneezing into an elbow or shoulder keeps germs from getting on hands.

What Children Do

Children will construct a self-portrait demonstrating the proper way to cover their mouths when sneezing.

Materials Required

  • Construction paper, two and a half 9" x 12" sheets per child
  • Oval pattern (blackline master 3.6)
  • Scissors
  • Glue or glue sticks
  • Facial tissue
  • Optional Yarn

Advanced Preparation

  • Duplicate blackline master 3.6 on a 9" x 12" sheet of construction paper, one per child. This sheet will be used for drawing a face.
  • Cut a 9" x 6" sheet of construction paper for each child. This sheet will be used for tracing their hands.
  • Optional Cut yarn into 6" to 8" strings. This will be used for hair.

Suggested Sequence

  1. Explain to the class that they will be creating portraits of themselves covering a sneeze with a tissue.
  2. Have children cut out the oval from the sheet of construction paper and glue it onto another blank sheet of construction paper.
  3. Tell children to draw their face on the oval.
  4. Have children trace one of their hands on the 9" x 6" sheet of paper and cut it out.
  5. Have children glue the bottom of the hand (palm area) onto the chin of the drawn face, so that the fingers of the hand still lift up.
  6. Have children slide a piece of tissue between the face and the unglued part of the hand, covering the mouth and nose.
  7. Optional Glue on the yarn as hair.

Check for Understanding

Ask the following questions:

  • Why is it important to cover a sneeze?
  • Why is the tissue important?
  • Why is it important to wash and/or sanitize your hands after using a tissue?
  • How else can you cover a sneeze?
  • What other ways are germs spread?
  • What else can children do to stop the spread of germs?

Extensions

  • Older children can write a story to go with their self-portrait, describing a time they were sick.
  • The portraits can be made into a bulletin board.
