Grade Levels Pre-K through Grade
1
Estimated Teaching Time
15 minutes
Interdisciplinary Connections
- Participating in a story presentation (Language Arts, Drama)
- Singing (Music)
- Counting forward and backward (Math)
- Miming hand hygiene steps (Science)
Objective
Children will learn the association between washed and sanitized hands
and fewer germs.
What Children Do
Children will count, echo a simple story and sing a familiar tune with
the theme of keeping one’s hands clean. They will also make a “germ
necklace,” which serves as a hands-on manipulative to assist in
counting.
Materials Required
Advanced Preparation
- Cut yarn into 24" strings, one per child.
- Count out 20 pieces of macaroni or beads for each child, and place
them in paper cups.
Suggested Sequence
- Have children construct “Germ Necklaces,” made
of the yarn and dried macaroni or beads. They should use 15 to
20 pieces for each necklace, leaving 18 to 20 inches of yarn to
slide the macaroni or beads along. The necklaces will keep the
macaroni or beads from ending up all over the floor, and can be
used for other counting activities. Explain to the children that
in this activity each piece of macaroni or bead represents a germ.
- Direct children to sit in a circle. Inform them that you have
a story to tell them but will need their participation. They are
to echo or mimic what you say or do.
- Read the script.
Check for Understanding
- Ask the children to present their findings to the class.
- Why is it so important that we wash and/or sanitize hands after sneezing
into them?
- Is it enough to simply rinse hands with water?
- Can you really see germs on your hands?
Extension
Ask children to offer examples of other situations when it would
be a good habit to wash and/or sanitize hands. [Before snacks
and meals, before and after using the toilet, after shaking someone's
hands.]
